What
size flag do I order for my upright, groundset flagpole?
Generally,
your flag will display best if the length of the long side of your flag is
about 1/4 to 1/3 the height of your flagpole.
However,
the diameter and wall thickness of your flagpole should also be considered,
especially when flying a flag in high wind situations, or if using an over-sized
flag.Our one-piece residential
and our commercial poles are designed to withstand sustained winds from 60-120
mph or more with a flag flying, depending on the model. But, it is always best to take your
flag down when a storm is predicted, to extend the life of your flag and to
prevent unnecessary stress on your flagpole.

Which
flag fabric should I choose for my United States and other traditional flags?
Nylon - 200 denier duPont nylon, our most popular flag fabric.Durable and sun resistant, flies easily
in a light breeze, dries quickly. Most military, historic, state and national flags are available in
nylon.
Polyester - Heavy duty and long lasting.Best suited for high wind locations, does not fly well in light breezes. Deep colors, with an appearance
similar to cotton, but with superior durability.Available in 50 star US flags. We are adding polyester states and
military to our site soon, meanwhile, call or email for info.
Cotton - Traditional character and authenticity.Deep colors and rich to the touch, but not as durable as modern flag
fabrics. Perfect for holiday and special occasion display, historic flags, photography and ceremonial uses.
What
fabrics are your decorative flags made of?
Poly-cotton
appliquéd - The durability of polyester, blended with the tradition and
richness of cotton.Our appliquéd
decorative flags are handcrafted in New England and feature original artwork in
a large variety of folk and traditional themes.Designs are visible front and
back.Lettering if used, is visible
one side only.
Dyed or
printed polyester - Featuring original artwork from numerous well known
artists, our printed decorative flags are made with several different
processes, such as dye sublimation or digital printing, for bright crisp colors
and durability.
What
sizes of decorative flags do you carry?
Decorative
flags come in 3 basic sizes, which we call garden, medium and large:
Garden
Size - approx. 12 x 18 inch.Available in our polyester printed styles as well as poly-cotton
appliquéd.
Medium
Size - approx 28 x 40 inches, the perfect size for many homes, porches, and
areas with limited space. All of our printed decorative flags and many of our
poly-cotton appliquéd flag designs are available in medium size.
Large
Size - approx 3 x 4 1/ 2 ft, well suited for medium to large homes or more
spacious areas for a beautiful display any time of the year.Available in
poly-cotton appliquéd style only.
What
does sleeved or grommetted mean?
Grommets
have been the traditional finish for flags for many years. Grommetted flags features
a canvas band sewn onto one edge, with two or more brass grommets
inserted.Fasten to your pole and
bracket set with flag fasteners or tie wraps, or to your upright pole with
flagsnaps.Our largest size US and
other traditional flags feature canvas headings reinforced with roped thimbles at either corner, and grommets every few feet along the heading for
additional strength and support.
Sleeved
is a newer, modern finish.Starting with decorative flags and now available on US and other flags,
it features a folded over or added on sleeve sewn on one side of the flag through which you
slide your pole, much like you would put a curtain on the curtain rod.Inside the sleeve is a tab of fabric or
leather, with a button-hole or slit.Just button your flag onto the hook or fastener of your pole, mount it
in your bracket and your flag is flying beautifully in a jiffy! Our garden flags feature a
smaller, more fitted sleeve, which slides onto our garden posts with no
fasteners needed.
Where
are your flags made?
Our United
States flags have always been and will always be Made in the USA of
top-quality American made fabrics.
Almost all
of our other flags - nations, states, military, historic, novelty - as well as
most of our decorative flags, poles and hardware, are also made in the USA.There are a few items that are no
longer available domestically and so we do have to use a few products
constructed or printed elsewhere, or made in America of non-domestic fabrics. We do try to use American made
products whenever we possibly can.
We carry
top name brands such as Annin, Flagzone, Valley Forge, Eder, Custom Décor,
Toland, Magnet Works® and others, which have a legacy of quality you
can depend on.
How long
will my outdoor flag last?
This
question has no precise answer.Flag
wear depends on many factors such as wind, rain, pollution, sun exposure and other flying conditions. These conditions vary with
altitude, location, height of flagpole, etc.The US government requires that their flags last at least 90 days. Our United States flags
meet or exceed these standards.We
have customers replace their flags every 4-6 months, and others whose flag lasts several or even many years.
You can
extend the life of your flag by having several which are rotated. Wash your
flag on gentle cycle with a mild detergent when it becomes soiled.Be sure it is thoroughly dry before
storing.Check for fraying and
re-hem at the first sign of wear.
How do I
dispose of my worn US flag?
Many local
veterans groups offer flag retirement, as do some service organizations, fire
companies and scout troops.We
will also be glad to retire your US flag, which we do in cooperation with our
local Marine Corps League. Just send your worn flag to us, or if you are nearby, drop off your flag anytime. If you are ordering a replacement US flag, in the comment section of your order, request a prepaid return envelope to send your worn flag back to us for retirement. Be sure to specify the size and fabric of the US flag to be retired so that we can calculate the return postage needed.
If you
prefer to retire your own US flag, please do so in a dignified way, by burning
privately, or by burial.
